When would you use this?
You want students to submit a video their submission for a Canvas Assignment. It is also possible to keep the submissions private or allow students to view each other's videos.
Instructions
View this video tutorial to learn how to set up the video assignment in Panopto. A Panopto video can be created on a user's phone or laptop and can include screen-sharing, PowerPoint presentation, or simply the webcam of the individual.
Initial Setup:
- In Canvas, open the course where you would like students to record videos.
- In the Course Navigation Menu, click on "Panopto Video"
- Click the "More" Menu for the course folder (three dots at the top right next the "+Subscribe" button)
- From the drop-down menu, select "Settings" (Gear Icon)
- Under Assignment Folder, click “Create Assignment Folder”. The folder will be created automatically with the default name "[Term] - [Course Name][assignments]"
- Now, either click to open the assignments folder or click the X at the top right to close this Popup window
Open Assignment folder and Update Settings:
- Open the assignment folder
- Click the "More" Menu for the course folder (three dots at the top right next the "+Subscribe" button)
- From the drop-down menu, select "Settings" (Gear Icon)
- From the Overview area, you can edit the name of the folder to include the title of your assignment
- From the Settings area, you can opt to check the box to “Allow viewers to see each other’s sessions” – which will allow students to see each other’s videos. Default is that students cannot see each other’s videos.
How Will Students Get their Videos Into the Folder?
In general, students' videos will end up in the folder with no problem. If a student attempts to create a Panopto video from anywhere in your Canvas course, it will default them into the assignment folder because that is the only one they have write-access to. Confusion can arise if students have access to assignment folders in multiple courses, but this is very rare.
The easiest way to assign students to create a Panopto Video is to make an assignment and select "Submission Type = Online" and then choose "text entry". In your assignment instructions, guide students to embed their Panopto video into the text box by using the electical plug button (or the NEW Panopto button) in the Rich Content Editor menu.
Do Not select "Submission Type = External Tool." The only types of Panopto assignments that can be created this way are assignments in which students must watch a video, or take a quiz within a video, not create one themselves.
This video showcases what the student experience could look like if you asked the student to submit their Panopto video to a Canvas assignment. However, it is also possible to simply ask students to record directly within the Panopto Video assignment folder (without tying it to a Canvas assignment).
