It is possible to generate Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) captions for multiple languages in Panopto.
To do this, the user must set the captioning language for a folder. It is not possible to set a captioning language for individual videos. So all videos in a given folder should be in the same language. Please follow the following steps, with Panopto Guides (with screenshots) linked for each step:
1. Create a new folder (it can be a sub-folder of another folder). To do this, click the +Create button (top left) and select "New Folder" from the drop-down menu. See How to Create a New Folder
2. Navigate into the folder
3. Click on the More menu (3 dots) on the top right and select "Settings"
4. In the window that opens up, click on the "Settings" tab. Change the Content Language from the Site Default (English) to whatever language the video is in. See How to Use Multiple Language ASR Captioning
5. Under "Automatically Caption New Sessions Using...", select "Automatic Machine Captions." This will likely make the captioning process move faster. However, if you neglect to choose this setting, you can request that the captions be added later: How to Add ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) Captions into a Video.
6. Finally, add the video to the folder, either by recording the video directly in the folder (using Panopto Capture or Panopto for Windows/Mac), or by uploading it, or by copying or moving a video from another folder.
7. Open the video to check whether captions have already been generated. If not, follow the instructions in How to Add ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) Captions into a Video.
8. Confirm (ideally with a fluent speaker of the language) that the captions are accurate and make adjustments as needed.
Note: this is not the same process as providing translated captions (subtitles) in a different language than video. The process described here is for generating, for example, Russian captions for a video that is in Russian.
