Creating a Rubric with both Instructor-Specific Criteria and Account-level Outcomes

Body

When would you use this?

An instructor has been asked to attach a rubric containing account-level Outcomes to one of their assignments, but the instructor would also like to use their own rubric to assess the assignment. As of June 2026, it is still not possible to attach two different rubrics to the same assignment, so the instructor must create a combined rubric that includes both their own criteria and the account-level Outcomes. There are two possible methods.

Method 1 (Add Instructor's Criteria to Account-level Rubric):

This method is recommended if the instructor's own rubric is relatively short and/or simple, or if the instructor's rubric hasn't been built yet, because this method requires the instructor to input their own criteria from scratch.

  1. Open the assignment
  2. Click the "Find a Rubric" button and, in the flyout menu that opens, find the account-level rubrics that has been designated for this assignment. Select it and click +Add.
  3. Click the pencil icon to edit the rubric (See note below)
  4. Click "Draft New Criterion" and input the criterion information in the pop-up window that opens. Click "Save Criterion" when finished.
  5. Repeat step 4 for remaining criteria.
  6. (Optional): Rearrange the order of the criteria by using the drag-and-drop handles on the far left, or click the "More" menu (three dots) on the right and click "Move Up/Move Down."
  7. Click "Save Rubric"

Note: the edits you make here will not be reflected in the account-level rubric. When another instructors goes to use this rubric in the future, they won't see your edits. By initiating edit mode, you are creating a new copy of this rubric. That's ok. The Outcomes included in this rubric are still the same account-level Outcomes and will generate data for account aggregated report.

Method 2 (Add Account-Level Outcomes to Instructor's Rubric):

This method is recommended if the instructor's own rubric is already built and is relatively long or complex. Before the combined rubric can be built, the instructor must add the account-level Outcomes to their course (steps 1-6 below).

  1. Click "Outcomes" in the Course Navigation Menu. If you do not see Outcomes, you may need to enable it in Course Navigation (see How do I manage Course Navigation links?)
  2. Click the "Find" button in the top right of the course Outcomes index page.
  3. In the window that opens, you will see an "Outcome Groups" list on the left. Under that, you should see an item labelled "Account Standards". Click on the small arrow to the left of that label to expand/collapse this tree. Below "Account Standards," you may see multiple accounts listed (root account and sub-accounts).
  4. Select the account in which your Outcomes are located. Any Outcomes associated with that account will appear in the right-hand pane.
  5. Click the +Add button next to any Outcomes you would like to add, or click "Add All Outcomes" at the top of the list.
  6. Click "Done" (bottom right) when finished.
  7. If the instructor's rubric is already attached to this assignment, proceed to step 3. Otherwise, click the "Find a Rubric" button and, in the flyout menu that opens, find the rubric that you would like to add to the assignment Select it and click +Add.
  8. Click the pencil icon to edit the rubric
  9. Click "Create From Outcome"
  10. In the window that opens, navigate to the first Outcome you are required to include. If you cannot find it, you may need to return to Step 1.
  11. Click "Import" to add the Outcome to your rubric
  12. Repeat steps 9-11 for remaining Outcomes.
  13. (Optional): Rearrange the order of the criteria by using the drag-and-drop handles on the far left, or click the "More" menu (three dots) on the right and click "Move Up/Move Down.
  14. Click "Save Rubric
