VoiceThread is an multi-media platform that enables instructors and students to interact asynchronously through multimedia.
Since VoiceThread exists to facilitate interaction between learning communities, the platform is accessible through the assignment set up process in Canvas.
This article will walk through how to create a VoiceThread Watch Assignment in Canvas.
In Canvas, create a new assignment. Since a VoiceThread Watch Assignment is only capable of producing a complete or incomplete score, in Canvas, enter 1 as the grade point value.
The connection between VoiceThread and Canvas is established by choosing external tool as the assignment submission type. The external tool submission type enables VoiceThread to pass back grades entered in VoiceThread to the Canvas gradebook.
Under the external tool options, click the find button next to the option box.
Scroll down and click VoiceThread.
Clicking VoiceThread triggers the appearance of the VoiceThread activity chooser, the first choice of which is the kind of activity you would like to implement. Choose "Assignment Builder".
In the Assignment Builder menu, choose to create a Watch Assignment. Click continue.
The next set of choices involve choosing or creating the media to deliver to students. Instructors can choose to use a pre-existing VoiceThread (which can be a video or a slide presentation) or to create a new VoiceThread. Once chosen or created, the instructor may edit and then review the selection. Next VoiceThread proceeds to the playback settings and permissions for the VoiceThread that your students will watch. Click continue, give the assignment a name, a description and then click publish.
A student will access the assignment through the assignment description page in Canvas.
Once a student watches the full assignment, they press submit.
Their submission creates an entry in the Canvas gradebook.
