Import Canvas quiz questions via spreadsheet

When would you use this?

You want to build a quiz in a spreadsheet and then import the questions into Canvas.

Instructions:

Quiz questions can be constructed in an Excel spreadsheet (.csv) and then imported into Canvas as a .qti file. Follow these steps:

1.Use the template, which is downloadable from Kansas State University: https://canvas.k-state.edu/info/tools/scantron/faq/build-a-scantron-quiz.html
2.Save the file as a CSV file type. (Name the file with a descriptive title.)
3.Convert the CSV into a QTI file. You can use the Kansas State converter tool: https://canconvert.k-state.edu/qti/
4.On the homepage of your Canvas course, choose Import Existing Content (top right of page).
5.Select QTI .zip file as the Content Type
6.Optionally, select a question bank where the questions should reside.
7.Click Import.

The questions will import in the "Classic Quiz" format. You will need to create a "Classic Quiz" to find your imported question bank.

In the template, use these specifications:

  • Column A is the type of question: MC (multiple choice); MR (multiple response); TF (true/false).
  • Column B is not used but must be there.
  • Column C is the point value of the question. It can be between 0-100 and can have up to two decimal places (3.33)
  • Column D is question body.
  • Column E is the correct answer. This should be a number 1-5, which corresponds to one of the possible answers listed in column F-J. For example, if the correct answer is in column F, put "1". If the correct answer is in column G, put "2". In other words, we use 1 to indicate a, 2 to indicate b, 3 to indicate c, 4 to indicate d, and 5 to indicate e. For True/False questions, use 1 for True and 0 for False. For multiple response questions, comma separate the list of numbers (e.g. "1,2" if columns F and G are correct).
  • Columns F-J are the possible answer choices. You can have 2 or more.
