Copy Blackboard Course into Canvas

When would you use this?

You wish to transfer course content from a Blackboard course to a Canvas course.

You wish to download and back up a Blackboard course because you will eventually want to import it into a Canvas course.


To export a Blackboard course into a .zip file:

  1. Log into Blackboard and access the course you wish to export.
  2. Scroll down to the "Course Management" section on the bottom left.
  3. Click on "Packages and Utilities" then "Export/Archive Course"
  4. Click on "Export Package"
  5. Under "SELECT COURSE MATERIALS," click "Select All"
  6. Click the blue submit button on the bottom right
  7. You will be redirected to the "Export/Archive Course" page, after a minute, refresh the page, and the .zip file will become available
  8. Once this blue (.zip) link is visible, click on it to download it.

To import a Blackboard course into Canvas:

  1. Log into Canvas with your Blackboard account.
  2. Scroll down and open an empty course shell.
  3. Under course status, click on "Import Existing Content" on the right.
  4. Under the Import Content section please configure the selections as such:
    • Content type: "Blackboard export 6/7/8/9 .zip file"
    • Source: select Blackboard zip file you have exported previously. It is most likely in your downloads folder.
    • Content: all content
  5. Then click the gold import button at the bottom.
  6. Once you see the green "completed" box, the course shell has been transferred over successfully.
