Set two deadlines for a Canvas discussion

When would you use this?

Your aim is to set separate deadlines for different phases of a discussion. Although a discussion only allows a single deadline, the following workaround can add a second date to the student "to-do" list for the course in Canvas.

Instructions:

View this video tutorial (4:50 mins) of the process.

You can associate a Canvas "page" with the student to-do list and use this page to highlight the first due date. The page can include the prompt, deadline for the first post, and even link to the discussion. The page can be situated in the appropriate module along with the actual discussion (see above video tutorial).

In the appropriate module:

  1. Create the discussion and set the due date for the end of the discussion.
  2. Create a page in the same module and check the box to add to the student to-do. Set the to-do date to be the due date for the first post. (Optionally, link to the discussion from the page.)
