Faculty and Instructor use of LockDown Browser in Canvas

Body

When would you use this?

You would use Respondus LockDown Browser during student quizzes, tests and/or exams taken remotely. You can also use LockDown Browser in a hybrid or classroom setting. LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. Exams, tests and quizzes created for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.

Instructions:

To enable LockDown Browser:

  1. First, build your quiz in Canvas.
  2. Click LockDown Browser in the Course Navigation menu on the left-hand side of your course. Note: if Lockdown Browser is not in Course Navigation, you must enable it in the course Settings (Navigation tab). See How do I manage Course Navigation links?
  3. You should see a list of all quizzes in your Canvas course. Find the quiz you wish to enable LDB for.
  4. Click on the down arrow to the left of the quiz title and select Settings
  5. Set the exam to require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser (see Dashboard example below)
  6. [Optional] Advanced Settings: click the +Advanced Settings button to reveal additional settings. The most important of these is "Allow students to take the exam with an iPad". By default, this setting is unchecked, so students will NOT be able to take the exam using an iPad, even if they have downloaded the LockDown Browser App. Additional resources are included below.
