1. Introduction

VoiceThread is a multimedia platform that enables instructors to implement asynchronous interactions between the classroom community.

This article will walk through how to create a VoiceThread Watch Assignment when student viewing will be graded.

2. Set up the assignment in Canvas

  • In Canvas, create a new assignment.
  • Enter the grade point value and complete/incomplete as the display grade type. 
  • In the submission type area, choose external tool to activate the connection between VoiceThread and the Canvas gradebook.
  • Under the external tool options, click the find button next to the option box.

  • Scroll down and click VoiceThread. 

3. Setting up the activity in VoiceThread

  • Choose assignment builder from the VoiceThread pop-up window. 
  • In the Assignment Builder menu, choose Watch assignment and click continue.
  • Choose a pre-existing VoiceThread or create a new one.
  • Review and confirm the selected VoiceThread.
  • Enter the assignment settings including playback preferences and assignment info. You do not need to enter due dates in VoiceThread as Canvas already has that info.
  • Click publish.
  • The VoiceThread activity wizard will close. In Canvas, click Select.

  • Save and publish the assignment. 

4. Student experience

This video demonstrates the student experience of a watch assignment.

5. Grading

A watch assignment in VoiceThread does not require grading information. However, a student is required to click submit after watching. The submit information is passed back to the Canvas gradebook.
