VoiceThread is a multimedia platform that enables instructors to implement asynchronous interactions between the classroom community.
This article will walk through how to create a VoiceThread Watch Assignment when student viewing will be graded.
- In Canvas, create a new assignment.
- Enter the grade point value and complete/incomplete as the display grade type.
- In the submission type area, choose external tool to activate the connection between VoiceThread and the Canvas gradebook.
- Under the external tool options, click the find button next to the option box.

- Scroll down and click VoiceThread.
- Choose assignment builder from the VoiceThread pop-up window.
- In the Assignment Builder menu, choose Watch assignment and click continue.
- Choose a pre-existing VoiceThread or create a new one.
- Review and confirm the selected VoiceThread.
- Enter the assignment settings including playback preferences and assignment info. You do not need to enter due dates in VoiceThread as Canvas already has that info.
- Click publish.
- The VoiceThread activity wizard will close. In Canvas, click Select.

- Save and publish the assignment.
This video demonstrates the student experience of a watch assignment.
A watch assignment in VoiceThread does not require grading information. However, a student is required to click submit after watching. The submit information is passed back to the Canvas gradebook.
