How to find the computer's name on a Windows PC

If you need to know your computer's assigned name for inventory purposes.

To find the computer's name on a Windows PC, follow these steps:

  1. In the bottom left search box on your taskbar, type view your PC name and press Enter

  1. A new window will open. Under the Device Specifications category, find Device Name. Your computer's name is the text located to the right of this

Personal computers will typically have a string of random letters and numbers as their name (for example, ZY21AB). University computers are assigned a specific name and format. Typically, it will be the computer's A-Tag, B-Tag, or I-Tag followed by the assignee's username (for example, A12345-jsmith).
