TrueWays ASL and GoReact for ASL Courses

Overview:

TrueWays ASL (TWA) is an American Sign Language Curriculum. It is a "digital textbook" that consists of Canvas modules ("the textbook goes inside your course"). The TWA package consists of 2 parts:

1. Canvas course package (.imscc file) - this contains all the course materials (modules, files, assignments, etc)

2. The TWA LTI app [As of Sept 2023 - The TWA app has been installed in the World Languages sub-account, so no courses need to install this app.]

GoReact is an LTI app only that is used as an External Tool for assignment submissions. It allows students to make video submissions. [As of Sept 2023 - GoReact has been installed in the World Languages sub-account, so no courses need to install this app.] GoReact is not an explicit part of the TWA course package, but GoReact can be configured as an external tool to submit TWA assignments. Students must purchase separate Codes for TWA and GoReact

How to Configure TWA in your Course (3 methods):

Method 1: Request package directly from TWA

Choose this method if you would like to start fresh with the newest material from TWA

Step 1: Get Course materials package and import into Canvas

  1. Email hello@truewayasl.com and request a course package. They will reply with a link to a Dropbox, where you will find the file. Note: instructors do not have to pay for TWA. Students pay for access by purchasing a code from the bookstore.

  2. Click on the link to download the file(s) to your desktop.

  3. If you see the folder with the ending, .zip, you want to unzip it (by clicking on it).
  4. Then you should see a folder with the ending .imscc - perfect - don’t open it - leave it as is. (This .imscc file is what you will import into your course).
  5. Open your Canvas course
  6. Click on Settings on the course menu on left, then
  7. Click on “Import Course Content” on the right.
  8. Pick “Canvas Course Export Package” from the drop-down menu.
  9. Then choose the .imscc file that you downloaded (and have not opened).
  10. Give it time to load the TWA course files in your course - usually a few minutes.

Step 2: Install TWA App

Good news, you don’t have to do this! As of September 2023, The TWA LTI app has been installed at the sub-account level for World Languages, so it does not need to be installed for each course.

When the app is successfully installed, you should see “What’s the Sign?” in your course navigation menu. If you do not see it, it may be hidden. See: How do I manage Course Navigation links?

Step 3: Find the Course Identifier and Share with TWA

  1. Click on What’s The Sign? in the course navigation menu on the left side of your screen.

  2. You should see something similar to this: “Hello there! Congratulations on completing “Step 2: Adding the TRUE+WAY ASL App”!  Now, please copy this identifier e49b5b7d1bca533SAMPLE2cd565461549d4 and send to Hello@truewayasl.com for activation. Thank you!

  3. Please copy and paste the course identifier you see in your course, in an email to Hello@truewayasl.com, along with the course number and the units you’re using, so TWA can activate your course.

Method 2: Perform a Canvas Course Copy from a course you previously taught

Step 1. Copy your Canvas Course.

See How do I copy content from another Canvas course using the Course Import tool? Note: you can only course copy from courses in which you are enrolled as the instructor.

Method 3: Perform a Canvas Course Copy from a colleague’s course.

Step 1. Get permission from colleague

Send an email to eto@framingham.edu requesting a course copy – tell us the exact name/course code for the course, and CC the original instructor. ETO will perform the course copy on your behalf as soon as we get permission from the original instructor.

Student Access

Once the course has been set up completely, students will be prompted to enter their codes which they have purchased from the bookstore. If a student's code is not working, first confirm that setup has been done correctly by the instructor. Then, if problems persist, the students should email hello@truewayasl.com and share their name, institution, course, and code. A common problem is that students are mixing up their TWA codes and their GoReact codes.
