Creating an Assignment in Canvas

Assignments in Canvas can be created in 2 ways, directly within a module or through the assignments page.

To create an assignment within a module:

  • Click on the "+" button to the right of the module name, select "Assignment" from the dropdown menu, and then "[Create Assignment]"
  • Give the assignment a name and click on "Add Item"
  • The assignment will appear at the bottom of the module
  • Click on the assignment's name, and then on the "Edit" button near the top of the screen, and follow the "To edit an assignment" instructions below

To create an assignment within the Assignments page:

  • Navigate to the Assignments page of your course and click the yellow "+ Assignment" button at the top right of the screen
  • The edit assignment page will be displayed. Enter a name for your assignment, and follow the instructions below

To edit an assignment you've created:

  • If you didn't follow either set of instructions above: Navigate to the edit assignment page by clicking on the assignment name
  • From the edit assignment page, you will see several fields, as detailed below (in order from the top of the page to the bottom): A screenshot overview of editing an assignment
     
    • Assignment Name: lets you edit the name of the assignment, as it appears in your course
    • Text entry: allows you to enter information and instructions for student
    • Points: lets you assign a number of maximum points to an assignment
    • Assignment Group (if enabled): lets you place the assignment in a group with others
    • Display Grade as: changes how the grade shows (for you and students) in the course gradebook
    • Do not count this assignment towards the final grade: lets you create assignments that do not impact the final grade
    • Submission Type: lets you choose how students submit their assignment
      • "No Submission" indicates this assignment does not require a submission (such as an in-class activity)
      • "Online" indicates the assignment should be submitted/uploaded online (and creates the field for students to submit their assignment)
      • "On Paper" indicates that the assignment has a paper submission
      • "External Tool" will bring up the external tools menu to integrate tools from outside Canvas
    • The next several tools will vary depending on your submission type, but include:
    • Group Assignment: indicates this assignment receives a group grade
    • Peer Reviews: adds a peer review component to the assignment
    • Assign: lets you choose who is assigned and when the assignment is due
