How to Access Panopto Video at FSU

For users enrolled as teachers or students in Canvas courses: you will likely access Panopto through your Canvas courses (See Panopto in Canvas, below). Accessing Panopto this way is helpful if the user intends to use video as part of the course. By "clicking through" from Canvas to Panopto, a connection is automatically created between the Canvas course and Panopto: a course folder is automatically created, and permissions are automatically provisioned for course members.

However, FSU users can also access Panopto without going through Canvas:

  1. Navigate directly to https://framingham.hosted.panopto.com.
  2. You may be asked to select a type of sign-in (identity provider) from the drop down menu. Select "Canvas."
  3. Click the "Sign in" button.
  4. You may be asked to enter your FSU credentials at this point (or perhaps not, if you are already logged in in that browser)

The interface, controls and functions for Panopto are exactly the same, regardless of whether you are accessing via the Panopto web portal or through Canvas.

Who Can Create Videos, and Where?

Faculty

By default, all users who have the role of Teacher in a Canvas course will have access to a private personal folder called "My Folder" where they can create videos. Faculty will automatically get access to an additional folder for each course for which they are the Teacher. Please note that this folder does not get created until a user clicks on a Panopto link in the Canvas course for the first time.

If a faculty user would like additional folders, besides a My Folder and course folders they must reach to the Education Technology Office to request one (eto@framingham.edu). A typical use case for this would be in order to create a folder for an administrative office (such as Career Services) or program.

Staff

FSU staff who are not teachers will not have a My Folder, but may reach to the Education Technology Office to request one (eto@framingham.edu). They may also reach out to ETO to request a folder for an administrative office (ex: Career Services) or program.

Students

Students will have Viewer access to Panopto course folders for each course they are enrolled in. Students do not have Creator permissions, and do not have a My Folder. If an instructor would like students to create videos as a part of a course activity, they must create an assignment folder.

Students may be given Creator access, by request, to special folders for administrative offices, programs or projects if they are engaged in video work under the supervision of faculty or staff.
