Faculty and Instructor use of LockDown Browser in Canvas

When would you use this?

You would use Respondus LockDown Browser during student quizzes, tests and/or exams taken remotely. You can also use LockDown Browser in a hybrid or classroom setting. LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. Exams, tests and quizzes created for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.

Instructions:

Built-in to every Canvas course, to enable LockDown Browser, do this:

  1. find and click the link to LockDown Browser in the links in your course on the left-hand side
  2. click the orange Continue to Lockdown Browser button
  3. open the exam test or quiz you have created in your Canvas course down arrow to Settings
  4. set the exam to require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser (see Dashboard example below)
  5. [Optional] Advanced Settings: click the +Advanced Settings button to reveal additional settings. The most important of these is "Allow students to take the exam with an iPad". By default, this setting is unchecked, so students will NOT be able to take the exam using an iPad, even if they have downloaded the LockDown Browser App. Additional resources are included below.
