When would you use this?
You would use Respondus LockDown Browser when you want to prevent students from accessing other websites, documents or programs while taking a Canvas Quiz. LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. Exams, tests and quizzes created for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.
Lockdown Browser can only be used for Canvas Quizzes (not Assignments or other Canvas objects).
Instructors do not need to download any software but students do. See Download Lockdown Browser (individual user) for student instructions.
Before your First Quiz
It is STRONGLY recommended that you set up an practice quiz with Lockdown Browser and require students to complete it before attempting use Lockdown Browser for a graded quiz or test.
Instructions:
To enable LockDown Browser:
- First, build your quiz in Canvas.
- Click LockDown Browser in the Course Navigation menu on the left-hand side of your course. Note: if Lockdown Browser is not in Course Navigation, you must enable it in the course Settings (Navigation tab). See How do I manage Course Navigation links?

- Click on the down arrow to the left of the quiz title and select Settings

Additional Information:
Important Note about Copied Quizzes/Copied Courses
After you have enabled LDB for a Quiz, " - Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser" will be automatically appended to the end of the Quiz title. Please note: this title will persist if and when you copy the quiz (or the entire course) into a new Canvas shell. However, even though it will have "requires Lockdown Browser" in the title, the copied quiz will NOT be properly configured for LBD in the new course. The instructor must click on LockDown Browser in Course Navigation in the new course. If this step is skipped, LDB will not be properly enabled.
New Quizzes or Classic Quizzes?
Lockdown Browser works for both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes in Canvas. Not sure which one you're using? See Is it a New Quiz or a Classic Quiz?
In both cases, if the student has not already downloaded LDB, clicking on the quiz (in a regular browser) will prompt them to do so. However, after installation, when a student clicks on a Classic Quiz (in a regular browser), they will simply see a message " Respondus Lockdown Browser Required". They must then manually open LDB and navigate to the quiz.
With New Quizzes, when the student clicks on the quiz (in a regular browser), LDB will automatically launch and offer to close all other applications. It is a much smoother workflow with New Quizzes.
