Microsoft multi-factor authentication allows users to verify authentication using three methods:

• Microsoft Authenticator App on smart phone (recommended)
• SMS Text Message
• Phone Call

When setting up MFA, you must have access to a computer and your authentication device (smart phone, mobile phone for SMS or landline.)

Configuring Multi-Factor Authentication using the Authenticator App

Please install this application on your smart device prior to beginning this process. Microsoft Authenticator can be found in the Apple App store or Google Play store. It is a free download.

On your computer:

1. Open a browser and navigate to https://portal.office.com  
2. Type your full email address (@framingham.edu) and click Next
3. Type your password and click Sign in
4. You will receive a notification explaining that more information is required for  account security. Click Next

5. Configuration Step 1: How should we contact you?
   • On the drop-down menu, select  Mobile app.
   • How do you want to use the mobile app? In the radio buttons section choose Receive notifications for verification.  Click Set up

6. Configure mobile app page appears with a QR code in the middle.

This is only an example do not use this QR code.

On your smart phone:

1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app
2. Select add account
3. What kind of account are you adding? Select Work or school account

4. Select Scan the QR Code. Scan the QR code on your computer screen.  After you scan the QR code, click Next.
5. The Microsoft authenticator app on your smart phone will ask if you deny or approve sign-in.       Select Approve

On your computer:

Configuration Step 2: Let’s makes sure that we can reach you on your mobile app device appears on your computer screen while the authenticator app asks you to approve the verification. This is verification step.

On your computer

Configuration Step 3: In case you lose access to the mobile app. Microsoft recommends adding your mobile device phone number to act as a backup if you're unable to access or use the mobile app for any reason. Please enter your phone number and click Done

Congratulations! You have been enrolled in MFA. Authentication will last for 7 days. Meaning every 7 days, on each application on each device, you will be prompted to “approve” the sign-in    via the Microsoft Authenticator app to continue to your account.

Access to Office 365 through a browser will give you an option to remember your device for 30 days. - This box is not currently available.

Method 2: SMS Text Message or Phone Call

1. Open a browser and navigate to htpps://portal.office.com
2. Type your full email address and click Next
3. Type your password and click Sign in
4. You will receive a notification explaining that you will need to provide additional information for account security. Click Next
5. On the drop-down menus, select “Authentication phone” and “United States (+1)”.

Type your mobile phone number and choose your preferred method (i.e. text message or phone call). Click Next

6. Once you receive the six-digit code, enter it in the provided field and click Next
   • If you chose “Call me”, answer the phone and follow the instructions from the caller
