Options for Hosting Learning Activities for Users without FSU Credentials

When would you use this?

An FSU employee is organizing a group of learners who do not have FSU credentials, and needs solutions for organizing and sharing digital learning materials for the learners. Users without FSU credentials will not be able to access FSU's instance of Canvas, our Learning Management System (LMS).

Examples: Community education, non-credit bearing workforce development/professional education

Solutions

  • Learning Stream: FSU holds a limited number of licenses for Learning Stream, class registration platform. Several departments already have access. A Learning Stream "Event page" includes a nice “landing page” for the session, which can include content such as videos and uploaded documents. For assistance with Learning Stream, see Enrollment Management Systems (Non-Banner).
    • Limitations: attachments cannot be added to automated emails out of Learning Stream. However, as mentioned above, they can be uploaded to the event page. There may be a size limit to what can be uploaded to the event page
  • Zoom: All FSU employees can request a Zoom license. For programs that simply involve regular virtual meetings, Zoom may be all that is required. To request a Zoom account, see Zoom Account or Support. Additionally, FSU holds a limited number of licenses for Zoom Webinar and additional products which may offer more functionality. See Virtual Events for more information and to request assistance.
  • Microsoft Teams: All FSU employees have access to MS Teams as a part of the Microsoft 365 subscription. Programs with virtual meeting components can take advantage of the Teams Meeting feature (instead of Zoom). And Teams is an excellent solution for document hosting and collaboration. Non-FSU participants can join a Team as “guests” in the team. Guests can do most things in Teams, but there are a few limitations. See Comparison between Team owner, member, and guest capabilities in Microsoft Teams
  • Canvas Free-For-Teachers (FFT): If features of an LMS are needed, Canvas FFT is essentially another instance of Canvas, totally unconnected to the FSU system. Somewhat stripped down version of Canvas, see Canvas Free for Teacher Account Comparison. Available at https://www.instructure.com/try-canvas. The Education Technology Office can provide some end-user support, but Canvas FFT is not officially support by ITS, and there is no capability for administrative access.

Additional Information:

All of the above solutions, with the exception of Canvas FFT, require at least one coordinator to have FSU credentials in order to access the systems.
